Program Description

The Bachelor’s Degree program in Allied Health Management is comprised of a combination of courses providing skills such as managing the administrative area within a health services organization, medical law/regulations, and current procedural coding with health information resources. The Allied Health Management training program is designed to prepare a Florida Technical College student for a career as an administrator in the health services field.

Core Courses

Health Information Resources

In this allied health course, students will discuss the purpose of using electronic health record (EHR) software, as well as its applications and benefits in health information management. In addition, Florida Technical College students will use an electronic health record (EHR) to properly manage patient health information in a clinical scenario.

Current Procedural Codes/CPT

In this allied health course, students will examine the rules and guidelines of the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) Level II coding manuals. They will also discuss the benefits of using coding manuals for those who work or want to work in the medical field as a medical biller, medical coder, medical collector, or medical office administrator. Additionally, students will practice coding procedures and services following CPT and HCPCS Level II coding manuals and encoder software. They will practice acquired skills by completing lab exercises in preparation for the certification test.

Course Prerequisite: MED1065

Diagnostic Coding/ICD-10

In this allied health course, students will distinguish the characteristics and conventions of the ICD-10-CM and other diagnostic coding systems or code sets. In addition, they will determine the correct diagnosis codes and official coding guidelines, with extensive practice coding exercises.

Medical Billing and Insurance

In this allied health course, students will examine the revenue cycle management (RCM) procedures as it relates to billing and coding medical services. Additionally, they will analyze the different types of insurance programs, governmental and private third-party payers, workers’ compensation packages, and disability coverage. They will practice acquired skills by completing lab exercises in preparation for the certification test.

Medical Office Procedures

In this allied health course, students will develop skills related to medical office administrative procedures such as using electronic health records, scheduling appointments, handling mail and filing, billing and collecting, and preparing budgets. They will examine effective interpersonal skills and communication in various medical office settings, including stress management strategies and workplace ethics. Florida Technical College students will also analyze current trends in the medical office workplace and the role of the administrative professional within that setting. They will practice acquired skills by completing practical lab exercises in preparation for the certification test.

Anatomy and Physiology with Medical Terminology I

In this course, students will examine the anatomy and physiology of the human body as well as the related medical terms and abbreviations. They will discuss the levels of human body organization, homoeostasis, histology, cytology, and the integumentary, musculoskeletal, nervous, and special senses systems. They will also analyze the meaning of medical terms according to their basic components—prefixes, suffixes, and roots—in addition to special numerical, positional, and condition-related components. Florida Technical College students will practice acquired skills by completing practical lab exercises in preparation for the certification test.

Anatomy and Physiology with Medical Terminology II

In this allied health course, students will examine the anatomy and physiology of the human body and the relationship with the medical terms and abbreviations used to designate them. They will discuss the levels of human body organization, gynecologic conditions, reproductive, circulatory, sensory, and lymphatic systems, and an overview of the brain function. Furthermore, they will analyze the meaning of medical terms and procedures through their basic components such as prefixes, suffixes, and roots, in addition to special numerical, positional and condition.

Accounting I Lecture/Lab

This allied health course will provide students with the knowledge of analyzing, classifying, and recording business transactions in both manual and computerized environments. Emphasis is placed on understanding the complete accounting cycle and preparing financial statements, bank reconciliations, and payroll. Florida Technical College students will define accounting terminology; analyze and record business transactions in a manual and computerized environment; complete the accounting cycle, prepare financial statements; and apply accounting concepts related to cash. 

Prerequisite: Successful completion of a 100/1000 or 200/2000 level mathematics course

Business Management Lecture/Lab

This allied health course includes an introductory discussion in the following areas: the economic setting of business, the structure of business, business financing, management, ethical and social responsibilities of business, marketing and physical distribution of goods and services. The areas discussed in this course serve as the basic foundations for more specialized courses in business.

Introduction to Marketing

In this marketing course, students will examine key marketing concepts and its application to today’s business environment. They will also analyze marketing concepts and principles that are essential to monitoring competitive forces and building successful customer relationships. In addition, Florida Technical College students will evaluate various methods used to research and develop target markets as well as the fundamentals of ethics and social responsibility.

Microeconomics

In this economics course, students will create a logical and coherent framework in which to organize economic phenomena related to microeconomics. The students will analyze several economic models for the explanation and hypothesis of wide variety of economic (and seemingly non-economic) phenomena. Likewise, the student will interpret the microeconomic theory that allows the student to gain a fundamental understanding of the effect that human behavior, preferences and choices have in an economic setting.

Leadership and Organizational Behavior Lecture/Lab

In this allied health management course, students will discuss practical applications of current research in human behavior to understand organizations. They will review interpersonal processes, problem-solving, and managerial decision-making. Moreover, students will examine power, politics, ethics, and conflict in organizations. Finally, they will analyze individual behavior, motivation and performance, interpersonal relations, small group relations, leadership, and organizational culture.

Health Services Organization Management and Marketing Lecture/Lab

In this allied health management course, the students will analyze foundational aspects of healthcare organizations. They will examine specific areas, including the development and evolution of the industry, operational procedures, and administrative oversight. They will also evaluate the performance of health care professionals, teamwork motivation, communication and conflict management, and the development and implementation of strategy.

Health Information Systems Lecture/Lab

In this course, students will examine the general principles of finance as they relate to health care organizations; these include sources of revenue for various health care entities, fundamentals of finance for health care organizations, principles of accounting, interpretations of ratios using industry-wide comparisons, balance sheet and income statement preparation and analysis, budget analysis and cost control measures, cash flow, and financial reporting. They will also analyze issues surrounding budgeting dynamics that alter financial conditions.

Healthcare Human Resource Management Lecture/Lab

This allied health management course introduces contemporary healthcare human resource management issues within the U.S. Healthcare system. Contrasts the differences between personnel administration and elements of strategic human resource management. Florida Technical College students learn key concepts such as; line vs. staff relationships, the manager/employee relationship, job design, job analysis, position descriptions, recruitment, retention, promotion, succession planning, legal issues, safety issues, labor relations, training, compensation, benefits, and performance appraisals. Current trends in healthcare human resource management are covered.

Introduction to Healthcare Financial Management Lecture/Lab

This allied health management course provides an understanding of general principles of finance as it relates to health care organizations. Issues surrounding budgeting dynamics that alter financial conditions are also examined.

Healthcare Policy and Law

In this allied health course, students will analyze healthcare policy, regulation, and law. They will also review sources of common, statutory, and constitutional law; contracts; and intentional torts. In addition, students will discuss the organization and management of corporate, for-profit, and nonprofit healthcare organizations (HCOs). Furthermore, they will assess liability issues for individuals and HCOs, admission and discharge issues emergency care issues, consent treatment consent issues, taxation issues, and antitrust issues. Moreover, students will examine medical staff appointments and privileges. Finally, they will evaluate fraud, abuse, and corporate compliance programs.

Population and Health

This allied health course allows the students to examine community health issues, wellness and disease, and quality of life of defined consumer populations at the state and federal levels, along with lifestyle issues and practices and the impact they have upon health services. In addition, the student will explore population health issues in relation to the impact they have on the use of available goods and services, illness and disease and overall community health and wellness programs.

Admission Requirements

  • High School Diploma or a recognized equivalent.
  • A student must first successfully complete an Allied Health (Medical Assistant Technician, Billing and Coding, or other) Diploma or higher, from either FTC or another accredited institution, as a prerequisite for enrolling into the Allied Health Management Bachelor program.

Healthcare Provider Programs

Applicants for healthcare provider programs including the Medical Billing and Coding Specialist Associate in Science Program, Medical Billing and Coding Specialist Diploma Program, and Medical Assistant Technician Diploma Program must complete a Student Attestation of Understanding That Criminal and / or Health Background May Limit or Prevent Employment in Healthcare Provider Fields form. The student attestation form was designed to disclose certain requirements or limitations to prospective students interested in training for the healthcare provider field. This requirement is established in consideration of Fla. Admin. Code 6E-1.0032 (6)(g) (2012).
